Cathy was one of the first wave of exceptional athletes to run at Waverley Little aths in the early days. Testament to this is the fact that she still holds no fewer than 6 sprint records, some 30 years later.

Here are some of our most successful athletes from the beginning of Waverley Little Athletics Centre, back in about 1968/69. Many of these kids (now adults) STILL hold records that have stood the test of time, and they should be congratulated for not only that, but their achievements since moving on from Little Athletics ! If anyone has any more info/pics on the athletes listed below, or would like someone you know of listed - let me know ! |
Cathy MilburnCathy was one of the first wave of exceptional athletes to run at Waverley Little aths in the early days. Testament to this is the fact that she still holds no fewer than 6 sprint records, some 30 years later. Michael HarveyMichael has competed for Australia Internationally on more than 15 occasions. Predominantly a "race walker", he still runs Cross Country at State level and most recently in December 2004, completed the National Ironman (42km run , 10km swim , 100km bike) event in Perth. Michael held some walk records in the early years at Waverley - but these were over different distances to current and aren't recorded anywhere ! Michaels list of achievements in the race walking events over more than 20 years are enviable! Melanie DyballAside from her athletic ability, Melanie was also a member of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, which I believe is where her career has now taken her. Kate Richardson (formerly Anderson)The Pinnacle of Kate's athletics career came when she won the 1998 Commonwealth Games 5000m GOLD Medal in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. David RuschenaDavid continues to climb the Australian 5000m rankings with a fantastic 4th place at the Telstra A Series on Thursday 17th February 2005. David took the battle up to Craig Mottram and two Tanzanian runners and lead during parts of the race. He finished less than 10sec behind Mottram to record another PB of 13:37.57. Sonia BritoSonia holds no records at Waverley Little Aths. She is now however, an outstanding athlete, who has persisted to follow her dream and practice hard ! Sonia was a VIS scholarship holder prior retiring from athletics in 2007, and is finally completing her Law/Medical Science degree. At the 2006 Commonwealth Games, Sonia finished 7th in the 400mh final. Many of you will have met Sonia at our Little Champions Coaching clinic that we had in November 2004 and last Sunday (2nd April 2006) at the Waverley Gift meeting, where she ran the 100m and 400m against the men (and was brilliant :-) Brendan ColeBorn 29 May 1981 Brendan Cole was a member of Waverley Little Aths from the late 80's through to 1996. He is the son of Life Member Barry Cole. Judging from the previous Waverley Records that Brendan has held, he has alway liked jumping LONG or HURDLES !!! Brendan played many sports including Volleyball, Swimming, Football and Cross Country running, and at 16, played top level Representative Basketball and toured the USA playing against their best at that age !! At 17, he decided on athletics as his chosen sport, and his career has steadily progressed since then. In 2000, he ran a World Juniors qualifying time, but missed selection by 0.1 sec :-( Brendan has a PB of 20.94 (2007) in the 200m , 47.67 (2005) in the 400m and his 400mh times have tumbled from 53.24 in 1999 to his current PB of 49.35 sec ! (which he ran in Osaka Japan in May 2009). Since 2004, Brendan has been training at the AIS (Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra), has an AIS scholarship and is coached by Matt Beckenham. Brendan made the Final of the 400mh at the Com Games to finish a fantastic 5th place in a time of 49.41 sec ! 2009 was a very good year for Brendan. He was a member of the Gold medal winning 4 x 400m relay team at the World University Games in Belgrade Serbia (with Chris Troode, Tristan Thomas & Sean Wroe) and finished 5th in the 400h final. He made the 400h semi finals at the World Championships in Berlin Germany and won no fewer than 5 International meets in his lead up to Worlds around August/Sept 2009 ! Waverley Records: (All records have since been broken)
National Championships:
Zatopek Classic 2005 Melbourne 1st 400mh National Series 2006 Hobart 1st 400mh NSW Championships 2002 1st 400mh ACT Championship 2006 1st 400mh Peter De La Haye
Peter excelled during his U13 - U15 years at Little Aths. Aside from holding a staggering 9 records all the way from 70m through to 1500m, he also teamed up to win many State Relay Championships as well.

Kevin OakeyKevin was a member at Waverley from u7 to u12 (1971 - 1977) with the Waverley North Club. Whilst being very competitive during this time, he found himself in one of Waverley's most talented age groups, and holds no Little Aths Records. He did however begin to excel when he entered the Seniors ranks, and still holds the Athletics Waverley 400mh record. Lisa Bull
One of the most talented athletes to come out of Waverley Little Aths during the 70's. I ran in the age group under Lisa some 28 years ago. I remember most of the kids were "in awe" of her speed at that time - and it appears with good reason too ! She shares the 100m record with Cathy Milburn, testament of her talent. Unfortunately, I don't know any more about her than this, but would welcome some input from anyone who does!
