What is Little Athletics?

Frequently Asked Questions

Little Athletics is a centre based Track & Field competition for children aged between 5 and 15.
There are two information sheets available:

Little Athletics Victoria has produced a Parent Handbook that provide comprehensive details about the little athletics program - a must read for new parents.

 

When and How to Join

The Little Athletic year begins in October and runs through to the following September.
You can register at any time during the athletic year providing you are between the age of 5 and 15. You must be 5 years of age to join.
Track & Field events are held between October and March and Cross Country events are held between April and July.

Which age group would my child be?

You can determine the age group by using the Age Group Ready Reckoner. Please ensure that you bring proof of age when registering.

 

Where are the events held?

Waverley Little Athletics Track & Field events are held at Central Reserve in Glen Waverley between 8:30am and 12:00noon on Saturday mornings. (with an occassional twilight) NOTE: The first half of the 2010-2011 season will be at Central Reserve and the remainder of the season (after christmas) is still TBC. (due to works being done at the track)


Cross Country is usually held at various parks between 9am and 11am in conjuction with Knox LAC.

 

How are the kids’ performances monitored?

Athlete's performances in all events are recorded during the program. Children receive a sheet of stickers detailing these performances next week. These stickers are placed in a ‘sticker book’ provided where performances can be assessed by the child. Additionally, the results will be made available at the Results section of the Waverley Little Athletics website.
 

What is expected of Parents?

Parents are expected to assist with the operation of Little Athletics by carrying out regular duty requirements ( every 2nd week). There are several types of duties possible, most parent enjoy 'officiating' at an event (e.g. Long Jump, Discus, Recording, etc.). Other typical duty needs are canteen, BBQ, set up & pack up of equipment, club administration, etc. Additional assistance is always welcomed on the Centre committee and all parents are free to help.

Parents must also remain at the centre at all times during competition in cvase of an emergancy or nominate a reponsible person for the child.

How to Help at Little Athletics has been written for the new parent or anyone who hasn’t been involved with the sport before. It aims to provide basic information about all the events that make up the weekly program. Additionally, Please ensure you read the Centre rules and Code of Conduct that is outlined in the Centre Booklet.

 

What is expected of the Children?

Children must:

  • Behave in a proper manner with their friends and parents
  • Uphold our motto “Family, Fun, Fitness” and  "Be Your Best"

Is there any training provided?

Further training is provided for all athletes from Under 9 to Under 16 in all events by qualified coaches. Please refer to our Training page for details.

Training for younger age groups are conducted during the Saturday morning program with  "Ontrack sessions". (Track & Field Only)

 

What about Safety, Insurance and First Aid?

Insurance is provided by the Victorian Little Athletics Association.

First Aid is provided at the Waverley Little Athletics Centre during competition.
 

What types of awards/trophies are presented?

At the end of each season, presentations are made to children based on:

  • The child’s performance
  • The child’s improvement
  • The child’s participation

Trophies, Medals and certificates are typically awarded. Note: ( every athlete will receive something, irrespective of required parental officials duty) The Waverley Handbook supplied at the time of registration will detail the types of awards and trophies available for each year.

 

What level of ability do children have to have, to join?

Our emphasis is on fun and fitness. Children can join with any level of skill or fitness. Children are given plenty of encouragement to achieve personal bests.
 

What is available to children with disabilities?

All children are encouraged to join. While there are no specific programs for children with disabilities, you are welcome to raise any issues with any committee member for a smooth transition.
 

Can children try it before joining?

Yes, you may have two "Come and Try" in the Track & Field season and one "Come & Try" during cross country, before making a decision to register. (Proof of age and the paperwork still need to be submitted before competing)
